Fund-Raising
The Roshni Centre (center) for Women exists entirely from private donations and from our various fund-raising activities. These include presentations about Rural Pakistan and Bake Sales, as well as an import company called; "The Lost Caravan” which sells scarves that local women have made and donates 100% the profit to The Roshni Centre. These scarves are called "Nadia" scarves. Here is the story of the Nadia Scarf:
Nadia Scarves
It was the dream of Nadia to have a women’s centre in her rural village of Pakistan, where women could get out of their homes, meet with other women, and learn some skills that would help them economically. She spoke to her sister-in-law, Rabia, about her dream. When Rabia was getting ready to head to the U.S. to share the unique items she had found in Pakistan, Nadia walked into the room with a beautiful new beaded shawl on. When Rabia said that she would like to get some of these to share, Nadia smiled and simply took off her new shawl and handed it to Rabia, and said: "I am honored that you like it, now it is yours."
The "Nadia" scarf offers the women of the mountains of rural Pakistan a way to share their beadwork with us. In buying these scarves, that look beautiful draped around your shoulders, giving off light or as a table runner, you help give hope to women of this poor, war-torn village. 100% of the profit from these scarves returns to the women of Pakistan.
Roshni is an Urdu word meaning "light". Wear the light and help spread it.
Katherine Denny of Maxwell, California was so inspired when hearing about The Roshni Centre for Women from her teacher Deanna Alexich, at Marysville Charter Academy of the Arts, that she put her inspiration into action. She decided to have a fund-raiser for the women. She ordered 12 “Nadia Scarves” from “The Lost Caravan” and was determined to sell them all before the winter break, which she did! We hope she will motivate others, to help make a positive difference in the world!
